New studio facility planned for Massachusetts could boost local location filming

The long-term success of Massachusetts’ screen industry could get a boost from plans to develop a state-of-the-art studio facility in the north-east part of the state. MJM Development, based in Andover, plans to build over an area of nearly 30 acres, with a phased development period of ten years.

At the moment the plan is to spend USD30 million developing four 18,000 square-foot sound stages and production offices. This would eventually expand to eight stages and the creation of up to 1,000 jobs at an overall cost of USD104 million. This is the very beginning of the process, with the land sale not yet completed, but the main players seem optimistic.

With our project fully funded through private equity, we are hopeful that we will have our red carpet out by late 2012.

Mike Meyers, MJM Development

Mike Meyers, Managing Director of MJM Development, said: “We have a long road to travel as we start our due diligence, engineering, and permitting. With our project fully funded through private equity, we are hopeful that we will have our red carpet out by late 2012.”

Massachusetts offers a 25% tax credit with a minimum in-state spend of USD50,000. Publicity for the region has built over the past year or so due to films like The Social Network, The Fighter and The Town, all of which featured Massachusetts locations and made an impact at the Oscars this year.
