Brad Pitt’s World War Z to film on location in London borough of Southwark

Brad Pitt’s pan-European shoot for Marc Forster’s zombie thriller World War Z will arrive in the south London borough of Southwark in the next few weeks. Shooting will take place on the Heygate Estate, although it’s not been confirmed whether the scenes are set in London or elsewhere.

The production recently filmed in Glasgow, doubling the city for Philadelphia. Scenes have also been shot in Falmouth in Cornwall, as well as Malta and Hungary. London made nearly GBP870 million from film production throughout 2010, according to figures from Film London.

The local council and Film London, the capital’s film and media agency, have worked with Paramount Pictures to bring the local community a very special opportunity, on a production featuring one of the world’s biggest stars.

Film London said: “The Heygate Estate is due for demolition as part of significant investment in the area and a major regeneration programme. Although some perceive the Estate as having negative connotations for the borough, the local council and Film London, the capital’s film and media agency, have worked with Paramount Pictures to bring the local community a very special opportunity, on a production featuring one of the world’s biggest stars.”

Philadelphia ended up losing out to Glasgow as a filming location partly because the future of the Pennsylvanian city’s filming incentive scheme was in doubt during the film’s scouting phase.
