Western Pacific island of Guam announces plans for film office

Guam in the Western Pacific Ocean has announced plans to open a film office. At the moment there are no formal processes in place for production teams looking to film on the island, but the film office move is the result of requests from local production companies.

The island is an unincorporated US territory and is part of the Mariana Islands. The island already has the Guam International Film Festival (GIFF) and a designated film office could help it boost its profile.

By exploring incentives and streamlining the permitting process, Guam can become a viable film location.

Tina Rose Muña-Barnes is the island’s Senator: “The overwhelming success of the Guam International Film Festival shows that this growing industry can enhance our economy, improve the Guam brand and strengthen our connection to the arts. By exploring incentives and streamlining the permitting process, Guam can become a viable film location.”

This year GIFF screened shorts and features from the US, Japan, Singapore, The Marshall Islands, Germany, Israel, The Netherlands and Australia. Obviously it lacks Hawaii’s global profile, but opening a film office could be a big boost for its filming industry.
