Alaskan filming incentives attract Nic Cage and John Cusack feature The Frozen Ground

Alaska’s generous incentive scheme hasn’t attracted any big-budget studio productions, but feature The Frozen Ground is currently in East Anchorage. Starring Nicolas Cage and John Cusack, it’s probably the state's biggest shoot since Big Miracle (formerly Everybody Loves Whales).

Budgeted at around USD25 million, according to the Anchorage Daily News, The Frozen Ground is based on the true story of Alaskan serial killer Robert Hansen, who was active in the early 1980s. John Cusack is playing Hansen, with Nic Cage as an Alaskan State Trooper.

When a state gets an incentive at this level, like Alaska has, people now are going to really look to come here.

Producer Randall Emmett told the outlet he would be interested in setting up a more permanent base in Alaska since the incentives restructuring in Michigan: “When a state gets an incentive at this level, like Alaska has, people now are going to really look to come here.”

The state offers filming incentives worth up to 44%, but is struggling to attract major productions. Last month it was confirmed that Zack Snyder’s new Superman film would double part of British Columbia's Vancouver Island for Alaska rather than travel further north.
