Antigua plans profile boost through film festival and tax relief

The Caribbean island of Antigua has ambitions to boost its international filmmaking profile with a new film festival and discussions about local infrastructure. Island authorities will also lobby for filming incentives.

We’re working on lots of tax-free services to attract filmmakers, as well as things like no location fees and easy access through airports, and through Customs and Immigration.

Authorities recently set up The Motion Picture Association of Antigua & Barbuda (MPAAB), which will visit a US studio in the next few weeks.

Bert Kirchner is President of the MPAAB: “We’re putting together a book showing all the best locations that Antigua has to offer. We’re working on lots of tax-free services to attract filmmakers, as well as things like no location fees and easy access through airports, and through Customs and Immigration. We’re working on ensuring that our hotel rates match those across the Caribbean too. We have lots of equipment and lots of skilled crew.”

The Antigua & Barbuda Film Festival runs from November 8th to 13th and will showcase Caribbean and South American films. Plans to boost the islands’ international appeal will be stepped up once the festival finishes.
