North Carolina Governor announces benefits of Iron Man 3 location filming

The Governor of North Carolina has officially confirmed her state will host Iron Man 3, which could deliver USD80 million locally and see the creation of over 500 production jobs. So far in 2011 the state has made more than USD200 million from location filming projects, a 185% increase on 2010.

Governor Perdue spoke at a press conference: “This is a red-letter day for North Carolina, and I mean it in all kinds of ways. America knows that North Carolina is serious about film, and Marvel Studios understands this is the best place in the country to do film business.”

Chris Cooney, co-owner and Chief Operating Officer of North Carolina’s Screen Gems Studios, revealed that the state’s been negotiating with Marvel for several months. Among the studio’s facilities is a 37,500-foot stage that contains one of North America’s biggest water tanks.

Cooney added: “We constructed that space envisioning a motion picture of the calibre and size of this one. This film is a game changer - not only for our studios, but for the entire state of North Carolina.”

The state offers a 25% filming tax credit for eligible productions spending at least USD250,000, with a cap of USD20 million per project. This offer was one of the reasons why Marvel decided against a shoot in Michigan, which now has an annual film fund of only USD25 million.
