Hey guys. Wondering if any of you can help with any leads on a deserted shopping mall.

We’re shooting a feature set entirely in this one location – through the shops, walkways, rooftop, basement etc. Originally we planned to shoot in the UK however the available options are in relatively poor condition and we are considering a switch Stateside or even towards South Africa.

I’ve been working through deadmalls.com but a lot of the listed properties are demolished or feature outdated information.

Just wondered if anyone may have any experience of information regarding anything like this. Any leads or information regarding locations or past experience filming in similar settings would be fantastic.

    Thanks

    James

Empty shopping mall: Alhambra Place, on Main Street East of Atlantic.

There’s 2 tenants but otherwise EMPTY, Including Mervyn’s…closed.restaurant at the south side of lot. Lots of Parking in the back, away from residents. Quote on Base Camp/crew parking for 11 days to a small company (3 5 tons, 5 2 rooms and a honey plus 40 cars -parking only) was $2500…mmmm……quite reasonable and inviting.

Permit and cops aren’t cheap…292/day and $100/hr for cops…but the rest of it is certainly refreshingly doable, and I worked with ALL agencies to pass something that’s never been done before…..give yourself a little time, but boy are they terriffic.

    Hi James

Edinburgh Film Focus has something – it’s a disused retail outlet village so not quite sure its entirely appropriate. Has a great feel to it though, very British.

If you’d like to see any pictures please contact me on the details below:

There’s a great photo gallery by Brian Ulrich of deserted malls in the Chicago area. Check it out. Hope this helps!

Off the top of my head I’d suggest calling Mimi Davis or Marshall Moore at the Utah Film Commission. I believe there are some possibilities in and around the Salt Lake City area — as well as some great below-the-line talent. Good luck.

    Hi James,
we’ve found an empty department store in Germany 4/5 stories high. originally build in 1913. As well as an empty smaller shopping mall. I’ve sent you some pictures by email with some questions, if still interesting.

    Best from Berlin
