TV production rise helps Liverpool filming levels increase nearly 25%
A surge in UK TV production helped lift filming production levels in Liverpool by nearly 25% between April and September this year. Feature film production has declined, but the BBC’s partial relocation to Salford Quays in Manchester has benefitted TV production in Liverpool.
According to a report submitted to the city council’s Culture and Tourism Select Committee Liverpool made GBP16 million hosting more than 250 productions in 2010-11. Captain America: The First Avenger was perhaps the biggest feature project, doubling both Liverpool and Manchester for New York in the 1940s.
Feature production and inquiries has declined, but TV production is up significantly.
Lynn Saunders, Liverpool Film Office
Lynn Saunders is Manager of the Liverpool Film Office: “Feature production and inquiries has declined, but TV production is up significantly. Children’s TV show Young Dracula recently re-located to Liverpool from Cardiff and we’ve also got police drama Savage and House of Anubis, which is a Nickelodeon production. The BBC has made a difference setting up base in Salford Quays.”
The production surge is mainly due to domestic shoots, but Liverpool’s international appeal shouldn’t be underestimated as it’s within just a few hours’ of the major studios in London. Kristen Stewart’s Snow White and the Huntsman recently filmed a short distance south-west of Liverpool in Pembrokeshire, Wales, and north of the English border both World War Z and Cloud Atlas filmed in Glasgow over the summer.
