  • Hi,

I’m a visual effects artist working in the film industry.
In Feb-March 2015 I will be travelling in India and Nepal and I’m planning to shoot some visual pieces purely as a passion project. I will be bringing some gear with me and I’m hoping to make a couple of video portraits of certain local individuals in their daily environment. This is an independent project to grow as a film maker and therefore has no commercial purpose.

    1) Would I need a government film permission for this?
    2) I am looking for a fixer to help me out for a couple of days (location hunting, translating, access to locals..) Who can help me?

    Thanks much,
    Jelle

    Dear Jelle,

If possible come in with a Journalist visa hence no permission is required. Generally Journalists carriy their gears, and shoot video of individuals. Regarding location hunting if you can specify the areas that you intend to visit it would make easier for a fixer to find the locations. Moreover please let me know the subject that you have in mind for this work.

India is a vast country with several cultures, languages, types of people invovled. It is very much necessary to pinpoint as to what you want to do. We have history that is older than 5000 years. Monuments are there that are from the 6th century AD till 17th Century most of them are being marked as World Heritage sites. Hence it is necessary what you want to portraw or research in India.

    Hi Jelle,

It is mandatory that you apply to the Indian Embassy/High Commission online and secure a proper J-Visa (Working Visa). With this you can import and re-export equipment and have the liberty to shoot in the locations you have listed. If you have any questions, contact us at indiafilmservices@gmail.com or call +91 9810029613

    Best wishes,

    Ajai Kapur
