Chronicle finds Seattle on location in Cape Town filming superhero teens

Cape Town in South Africa doubled for Seattle for scenes in the new paranormal thriller Chronicle. Using a pseudo-documentary style, the film follows a group of Seattle teenagers who get special powers when they find a strange object in a nearby forest.

With a budget of around USD15 million to play with, first-time feature filmmaker Josh Trank and his team considered all the usual global production hubs including Louisiana, Michigan, New Zealand and Vancouver, but eventually settled on Cape Town.

The city centre in Cape Town was used to stage elaborate stunt sequences where the teens use their powers to throw vehicles into buildings and evade the authorities. Filming also took place at Cape Town Film Studios, which has recently hosted Dredd and Denzel Washington’s Safe House.

Chronicle is in the middle of a staggered global cinema release.
