Superman film Man of Steel helps make 2011 a success for Vancouver Island
New Superman film Man of Steel was one of the feature projects that helped deliver over CAD2 million for Vancouver Island in 2011. The island covers nearly 20,000 square miles and is a 20-minute flight from the city of Vancouver. It’s the largest island in the Pacific Ocean east of New Zealand.
More than 30 separate projects filmed on the island in 2011, according to figures from Island North Film Commission (INfilm). Man of Steel filmed in the small town of Ucluelet, doubling the location for an Alaskan fishing village.
Unique locations like those found on Vancouver Island are often paramount in a filmmaker’s decision-making process.
Susan Croome, British Columbia Film Commissioner
Susan Croome is British Columbia’s Film Commissioner and spoke last week at a panel discussion held at Qualicum Beach on the island’s east coast: “Although unique locations like those found on Vancouver Island are often paramount in a filmmaker’s decision-making process, success in the motion picture industry is also based on outstanding customer service and word of mouth recommendations. British Columbia’s future success depends on happy customers today.”
INfilm actually serviced more than 100 projects altogether over the 12-month period and local authorities got back 21 dollars for every one that was invested in the industry.
