Malaysia prepares to launch 30% location filming incentive in 2012

Malaysia is preparing to launch a new filming incentive programme after a long lobbying campaign from the local industry. The figure being looked at is a 30% rebate and it’s expected within the next few months.

Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim is a Government minister and Kuala Lumpur’s Star newspaper reports he addressed a film seminar in the city yesterday: “The move is to encourage the filming of international movies in Malaysia and the growth of the local movie industry.”

Magan Appathurai is with Biscuit Films in Kuala Lumpur: “It’s been a long time coming, so we’re very excited about this! We expect to have more news in the next few months.”

The new programme’s expected to require a local spend of around USD1.6 million to enable international projects to qualify. Malaysia could start drawing a lot more international attention within the next year as Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios is scheduled to open a new facility in late 2013 outside Kuala Lumpur.
