TV production location filming falls nearly 10% in Los Angeles

The first quarter of 2012 was a period of decline for TV location filming in Los Angeles, with the total number of permitted shoot days falling by nearly 10% on 2011, figures from FilmLA show. Filming for TV drama fell by nearly 19% and reality shows by nearly 20%.

Paul Audley is President of FilmLA: “At a time when other jurisdictions - notably New York - are using generous film incentives to set TV production records, California is losing ground as the pilot and series production location of choice. Sacramento’s lax response to this threat to local jobs is dismaying.”

California doesn’t have a long-term TV location filming incentive at the moment, so last year there was an exodus of TV projects to New York. Commercial filming, on the other hand, saw a rise of nearly 11%, with more than 2,300 permitted production days in the first quarter of 2012.
