KRU Studios in Malaysia looks ahead to national filming incentive
Malaysia’s KRU Studios near Kuala Lumpur sees an opportunity to expand its operations once Malaysia launches a formal filming incentive, which is expected in 2012. The studio specialises in TV but has plans to expand.
Norman Halim is Executive President of KRU Studios: “We are situated only 30 minutes from Kuala Lumpur and we now have a couple of sound stages to offer productions with 40,000 square feet of floor space. At the moment we specialise in entertainment and game shows, but we plan to expand and aggregate the services that we offer.
Our long-term strategy is to develop more facilities – so far we have identified extra land for expansion – and we are also open to developing collaborative relationships with more production companies and studios.

Pinewood Studios will shortly be arriving in Malaysia, but Halim says he doesn’t view this as direct competition as the two companies work in different types of production. He considers that KRU also holds greater appeal as he says Pinewood will be much further from the city centre.
Malaysia’s filming incentive will reportedly be a 30% rebate, which is likely to prompt international attention on a substantial scale. Manila, Malaysia’s neighbour in South-East Asia, will get a big-screen showcase this summer in The Bourne Legacy, and Malaysia may also catch the spotlight.
