New Mexico counts benefits of Marvel’s Avengers location filming

New Mexico paid nearly USD23 million in tax credits to Marvel’s Avengers feature when it filmed on location in the state, but got a return of around USD90 million in production spending. The film has been a stunning success, making a billion dollars worldwide in just a few weeks.

New Mexico filming focussed on Albuquerque Studios - using six of the facility’s eight stages over ten months - and various locations around the city. Its location filming incentive programme is a 25% rebate with an annual film fund of USD50 million, making it one of the more competitive south-western states.

Senator Gerald Ortiz y Pino spoke to local news outlet krqe.com: “If we hadn't given them that [rebate], they probably would have made it in Detroit or Oklahoma or Utah. To say ‘Well we paid USD22 million, [but] what did we get for it?’ Well we got a lot. It's just hard to measure.”

Competitive filming incentives were also crucial to the project’s decision to double Cleveland, Ohio, for New York in the film’s action-packed finale.

New Mexico is currently hosting Johnny Depp’s The Lone Ranger, which will also be pumping millions into the state economy.
