Ben Affleck Costa Rica-set drama films in Puerto Rico instead
Ben Affleck’s new feature Runner, Runner – a drama set in the world of offshore gambling - is doubling Puerto Rico for Costa Rica. Puerto Rico is an unincorporated US territory offering a Caribbean look and a competitive tax credit.
Reid Mack is with the Business Plan Institute in Miami and spoke to the Costa Rica Star: “Costa Rica has the natural backdrop and surroundings to shoot beautiful movies but the economic environment is keeping some productions out. Authenticity often takes a backseat to business interests.”

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Fast Five and recent TV movie Treasure Island have all filmed in Puerto Rico over the last few years.
As well as offering a Caribbean climate the island has colonial architecture dating back to the 1500s in Old San Juan, with the old existing alongside a modern metropolitan city in the metro area.
