Gangster Squad films reshoots on location in LA’s Chinatown

Upcoming period crime feature Gangster Squad has filmed reshoots in the Chinatown region of Los Angeles. The community is considered film-friendly as the small streets and alleyways are easy to control, while period production design is straightforward.

Lori Balton worked on the film as a Location Scout and spoke to the LA Times: “It’s one of my favourite places to scout. It is so wonderfully evocative of a different era ... and best of all, the residents actually like the filming experience.”

Jody Hummer is a Location Manager who acts as film liaison with some of Chinatown’s key streets and also spoke to the outlet: “It’s one of the few places in Los Angeles that is fairly intact from the old days. There are a lot of exteriors and interiors that can be changed easily and it’s a historic treasure.”

Gangster Squad’s Chinatown scenes will replace a sequence in the original cut of the film where mobsters launch a gun attack on a cinema audience at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, a Hollywood landmark. The sequence was dropped in the aftermath of the cinema shooting tragedy in Aurora, Colorado, in July this year.
