Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine doubles Sydney suburb for streets of Tokyo

Hugh Jackman’s X-Men spin-off The Wolverine has been doubling a suburb of Sydney for the streets of Tokyo. Parramatta in Greater Western Sydney has had street signs and vehicle number plates switched for Japanese equivalents as part of the film’s set design.

Councillor John Chedid is Lord Mayor of Parramatta: “I’m excited and proud [that] Parramatta has been chosen as a stage for The Wolverine. It reflects the City’s quickly growing appeal as a leading filming destination and having this high-profile movie filmed here will only enhance this further.

“As well as generating jobs and investment, productions like The Wolverine boost our tourism and visitor economy by raising the City’s profile around the world.”

The Wolverine is based at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney and despite some New South Wales locations clearly doubling for parts of Tokyo, 20th Century Fox has said there will be location filming in Japan too.

Jackman is also a producer on the film and was personally involved in lobbying the Australian Prime Minister for a subsidy payment to make the Sydney shoot more viable. In the end the movie secured a AUD13 million payment and will spend around AUD80 million in New South Wales.
