Hangover 3 works with city agencies to film on Orange County freeway

The Hangover Part III worked with a host of municipal agencies to arrange a two-day shoot on a freeway in California’s Orange County. Filming took place on the California 73 between Newport Beach and Costa Mesa just south of Los Angeles.

Warner Bros spent three months negotiating the closure with the cities of Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, as well as agencies like the California Department of Transportation, the LA Times reports. Orange County welcomed the chance to boost its local film industry.

Gregory Alpert, a recent California on Location Award-winner for his efforts on TV show Luck, worked on the Hangover shoot and spoke to the outlet: “This is really the first time a freeway has been shut down in Orange County so it was a big deal. I hope it will lead to more filming down there.”

Like California as a whole, the Orange County Film Commission has seen a steady decline in regional location filming over the last few years. The commission operates on an annual budget of just USD20,000, down from USD125,000 four years ago.
