Malaysia confirms new location filming incentive for 2013

Malaysia will launch a 30% location filming incentive on January 1st 2013. The programme has been mooted for the best part of a year but was finally confirmed at a luncheon event sponsored by the 13th Asian Television Forum and ScreenSingapore.

International productions spending at least USD806,000 (RM2.5 million) locally will be eligible for the new Malaysia Production Incentive Rebate.

Afendi Hamdan is Chairman of the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia: “Both local and foreign film productions, including feature films, animations, documentaries, television productions and commercials, will be eligible for a 30% cash rebate on audited in-country spending.”

Following the incentive launch in January 2013, Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios is scheduled to open in May just outside Singapore.

Further north near Kuala Lumpur is KRU Studios, a facility that currently specialises in TV and which is eyeing expansion to take advantage of the new rebate.
