British Columbia production industry calls for more government support

Production professionals across British Columbia in Canada have called on the provincial government to increase support for their industry. Audiovisual work is increasingly shifting east, attracted by more generous filming incentives in Quebec and Ontario.

Pete Mitchell is President and Chief Operating Officer of Vancouver Film Studios and spoke to Global BC: “When we look at the end of January (2013), we see there will be four shows shooting in Vancouver. That employs about a thousand people and there are 25,000 people in the industry. Unemployment is about 90% and that’s what is causing this real outpouring of worry.”

British Columbia’s provincial government has indicated that boosting regional filming tax credits is not a priority, so for the time being the province’s production future appears uncertain.
