Godzilla remake and Apes sequel to boost location filming in British Columbia

A pair of big-budget features is set to boost location filming in British Columbia in western Canada. Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla remake has started filming around Vancouver and science fiction sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will shoot in the region in the next few weeks.

British Columbia (BC) has seen a dramatic production decline in recent months and the regional government has been under pressure to expand the location filming incentive. A Provincial Sales Tax will also take effect shortly, increasing production costs.

“[The] government will need to actively monitor the industry as we proceed through 2013,” said Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Bill Bennett: “We will continue to work closely with the industry as we know that the future of this essential creative industry is key to BC’s economic and cultural growth.”

Godzilla’s schedule will include a week on Vancouver Island with a sizeable production team. The Apes sequel follows on from the hit 2011 feature Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which also filmed partly in Vancouver and successfully rebooted the classic franchise.
