Michigan may keep location filming fund at $50m for another year

Michigan is likely to keep its location filming fund at USD50 million for the next year. The northern-US state is hosting several high-profile productions in 2013, including Michael Bay’s Transformers 4 and Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut How to Catch a Monster.

State authorities previously cut the annual film fund to USD25 million, reducing Michigan’s appeal to big-budget productions, but the figure has been shifting up and down from year to year.

“I think that the industry in order to be sustained has to stay at the current level of USD50 million,” Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville told local outlet MLive.com: “I don’t think there was any strong objection to that.”

Michigan has agreed a USD20 million incentive payment for the Transformers sequel to film on location in Detroit. Ryan Gosling’s production is on a much smaller scale but his star power has helped prolong Michigan’s time in the spotlight.
