Fargo TV series to double North Dakota setting filming on location in Canada

A new TV miniseries based on the Oscar-winning crime drama Fargo will be filmed on location in Canada. The original movie was made by the Coen Brothers and filmed mainly in Minnesota although it takes its name from a city in nearby North Dakota.

Neither North Dakota nor Minnesota is known as a production hub, so the miniseries is likely to use better filming incentives north of the border in either Alberta or Manitoba, reports local outlet The Forum.

“[Filming incentives are] one of those games that you can’t get into without the ‘go big or go home’ mindset,” North Dakota’s state tourism director Sara Otte Coleman told the outlet: “We’re talking millions and millions of dollars in order to compete with locations like Canada and a few other places in the US that have gone after it pretty aggressively.”

The original feature film Fargo follows the increasingly desperate exploits of a businessman in a wintry corner of small-town America whose plan to set up the kidnapping of his wife backfires spectacularly.
