Historic epic White Rajah scouts filming locations in Malaysia

Filming locations have been scouted in the Malaysian state of Sarawak for new historical epic White Rajah. Sydney-based producer Rob Allyn is working on the story of Englishman James Brooke, who became the first White Rajah of Sarawak in the mid-19th Century.

Sarawak lies on the island of Borneo, east of Singapore. Allyn, who is Chairman and CEO of Margate House Films in Sydney, has been scouting locations in Australia, Thailand and Indonesia, as well as Malaysia, for the USD15 million production, reports the Borneo Post.

“The saga of James Brooke falling in love with the beauty, wildlife, peoples and cultures of Sarawak is a great untold saga on film,” Allyn commented: “There are gorgeous beaches, jungles, rivers, wildlife, tourism amenities and state-of-the-art film studios throughout the region, but to shoot all or part of this film in the country where the story really took place is a filmmaker’s dream.”

Allyn has been travelling with Jason Brooke, a descendant of the White Rajahs, who were first given land by the Sultan of Brunei in 1841. Allyn added that he plans to make an historical epic in the vein of Braveheart and Gladiator.
