Hallmark cancels Colorado TV shoot for Vancouver filming incentives

Hallmark has cancelled plans to film a period TV miniseries on location in Colorado. When Calls the Heart will instead shoot in Vancouver, where it will have access to British Columbia's filming incentives, as well as an existing period town suitable for the show’s setting.

“When you play to win, you like to win them all,” Colorado film commissioner Donald Zuckerman told Denver Business Journal: “But as a movie producer, you never win them all. I’d be disappointed if there weren’t other applicants, but there are. I’m convinced we could successfully place our funding and end up with as much economic activity as if Hallmark came here.”

When Calls the Heart was set to become the first dramatic TV series to film on location in Colorado for more than 20 years. However, the production team had faced problems finding a suitable place around Telluride in the south-west of the state to build the period town set needed for the story’s setting.

Colorado offers a 20% filming cash rebate programme, which was a crucial element of Hallmark’s initial decision to film in the state, but When Calls the Heart will have access to more comprehensive resources in Vancouver.
