Brad Pitt tank film Fury doubles English countryside for wartime Germany

Brad Pitt’s new World War II tank drama Fury is filming on location in south-east England, doubling the region for wartime Germany. David Ayer is directing Pitt as an Army sergeant in charge of a Sherman tank that penetrates behind enemy lines in Germany in 1945.

Filming is taking place on private land around Shirburn near Oxford and is scheduled to continue through to mid-November.

“There will be intermittent controlled gunfire and explosives throughout our filming,” said Location Manager Lee Robertson on behalf of Pinewood Studios: “We would like to thank you in advance for putting up with us and making it possible to film at such a great location.”

England’s Home Counties have been popular for World War II dramas in recent years. The region offers locations that easily pass for German-occupied Europe and they’re close to London’s studio facilities. War drama Saving Private Ryan and miniseries Band of Brothers have been among the highest-profile visitors since the late 90s and both doubled the area for Normandy in the aftermath of the D-Day landings.

Brad Pitt has been a regular visitor to the UK in recent years and spent several weeks filming World War Z on location in Glasgow for one of the biggest shoots ever seen in Scotland.

Pitt’s partner Angelina Jolie is currently in Australia preparing to direct her own World War II drama. Unbroken will be based on the true story of US serviceman Louis Zamperini, who survived weeks lost at sea before being taken prisoner by the Japanese.
