Mad Max 4 finishes filming with location work near Sydney

George Miller’s new dystopian sequel Mad Max: Fury Road finished filming recently with a location shoot just outside Sydney in Australia. Much of the film was shot on location in Namibia, which offered the right sun-blasted post-apocalyptic visuals needed for the story.

Miller originally planned to shoot more extensively in Australia but unseasonable rains meant that his wilderness locations in New South Wales turned into lush flower beds, making them completely unsuitable. Filming faced a long delay before re-locating to Namibia and South Africa, and the movie’s theatrical release has in fact now been put back to 2015.

The filmmaker dismissed suggestions that the new Sydney sequences were in fact re-shoots in response to negative test screenings, telling the Sydney Morning Herald that the plan was always to finish in Australia.

“There are no re-shoots at all,” Miller told the outlet: “Our film – luckily, after a ridiculous amount of work – is testing extremely well. We're very happy. There has been a lot of doubt about it, [people saying] it took so long, but Warners have delayed it until 2015 to go into the top weekend of the year.”

Unseasonable rains meant that Mad Max wilderness locations in New South Wales turned into lush flower beds, making them completely unsuitable.

Australia has been in the international spotlight in recent months as the chosen filming location for true-life World War II drama Unbroken, which marks Angelina Jolie’s second film as director. Jolie filmed scenes in Gold Coast of Queensland before moving to New South Wales.

In addition, The Inbetweeners Movie 2, the second movie follow-on from the massively popular UK comedy series, is also filming in the country for a few weeks.
