Scottish army bases promoted as potential filming locations

Army bases owned by the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) in Scotland are being promoted as potential filming locations in a bid to attract more productions on the scale of World War Z. Landmarc Solutions has launched a new online portal with assistance from Creative Scotland.

The new website promotes MoD locations around the UK, with 16 in Scotland.

“The Scottish locations have been available for filming for a while, but this is the first time they have been promoted in this way,” said Location Manager Brodie Pringle: “They’re all film-friendly and accessible, and there are people there who know how to handle a filming inquiry.

“There are plenty of wide-open spaces available, as well as large storage warehouses and hangars that could be very useful as weather cover.”

Scotland has become very popular as a filming location in recent years. Brad Pitt’s zombie drama World War Z turned Glasgow into Philadelphia for an extensive shoot and Fast & Furious 6 filmed car chase sequences in the city. More recently, major US miniseries Outlander chose to film in retrofitted warehouse facilities just outside Glasgow.

Ministry of Defence land can be very useful for film productions as it tends to offer vast spaces that are suitable for a large unit base, while also offering impressive visuals. The relative remoteness can help keep the production away from any prying media. Christopher Nolan took to the skies above Wyvis Training Area in the Highlands for Bane’s dramatic airborne escape sequence in The Dark Knight Rises.

Warehouse facilities can be used to house interior sets so that less valuable production time is lost to bad weather. The spaces themselves may not be soundproofed, but they allow the opportunity to get raw footage in the can.
