Visual effects company Cinesite VFX to open new Montreal office

London-based visual effects company Cinesite VFX has announced it will open a new office in Montreal, Quebec. The company – whose credits include Tom Cruise’s upcoming sci-fi Edge of Tomorrow – will be spending CAD6.7 million with the help of an interest-free provincial government loan.

“Setting up a North American sister company marks an important step in the growth of Cinesite VFX,” said Antony Hunt, Managing Director of Cinesite VFX.

“The city of Montreal offers a number of significant advantages for our company, including a qualified workforce and vibrant film and video game industries. Those strengths will no doubt contribute to Cinesite Inc’s success in the Americas and to raising the profile of Quebec and its largest urban centre around the globe.”

Added Quebec Premier Pauline Marois: “Montreal will now be home to a new company, one that will be of strategic importance to its film and television and video game industries and is likely to draw more major film shoots and multimedia productions to Quebec.”

Cinesite is the second major visual effects house in a matter of months to announce a Montreal office, with Technicolor having made a similar movie in September last year.

Quebec offers a 20% tax incentive for labour costs involved with visual effects work, on top of the province’s base 25% filming incentive.

Action thriller White House Down, sci-fi sequel Riddick and X-Men: Days of Future Past have been among the biggest international feature productions to have filmed in Montreal recently. Cinesite's recent credits include George Clooney's The Monuments Men, spy thriller Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and Brad Pitt's World War Z. Mel’s Cite du Cinema is one of Montreal's major studio facilities.
