Historical drama New Worlds films on location at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol

Historical miniseries New Worlds filmed on location in and around Bristol in south-west England and was based at the city’s Bottle Yard Studios. Set during the Restoration period of the 1680s, the drama follows the lives of four young people in England and Massachusetts.

Company Pictures based the production at The Bottle Yard Studios for a seven-month shoot through 2013. Location filming took place in various period buildings in and around Bristol, including Berkeley Castle and Chavenage House, as well as in the Forest of Dean on the Welsh border.

“Being located on the doorstep of the fantastic period and rural locations in the area means that The Bottle Yard Studios can offer a spacious, convenient home for major productions like this, with easy access to all the facilities needed to manage a complex on-location shoot,” said Fiona Francombe, Site Manager at The Bottle Yard Studios.

Added New Worlds’ Producer Claudine Sturdy: “Basing production at The Bottle Yard Studios was perfect for us. We had easy access to all the main routes into and out of Bristol, as well as very good office and prop store space, serviced to a really high standard.

“Fiona and her team are a fountain of knowledge and were incredibly helpful with information about local suppliers and history; nothing was too much trouble! We were also able to work with some of the local companies on site who provided construction, low loader and data wrangling services for us.”

The Bottle Yard Studios are built on the site of a former winery and bottling plant, and since 2010 have offered 300,000 square feet of production space only a few minutes from central Bristol.

Television production has become much more viable in the UK since the government launched a TV tax credit in mid-2013. Company Pictures’ recent TV credits include lavish period miniseries The White Queen (above), which was filmed largely on location in Belgium for the BBC before the UK TV tax credit was made available.

New Worlds begins on Channel 4 in the UK on 1 April 2014.
