New York reveals details of historic Spider-Man 2 location filming spend

A new report has revealed that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 spent USD44 million in local wages and nearly USD6 million on hotel nights while filming on location in New York. Overall, the production spent USD150 million locally and was the largest shoot to have ever filmed in the state.

The figures were released by the Motion Picture Association of America. They show that the overall spend included USD4.5 million paid in local taxes, USD4 million on site fees and nearly USD2 million on catering.

“Thanks to the Film Production Tax Credit Program, we were able to attract the largest movie production ever to be filmed in the Empire State, and it paid off for New Yorkers from Rochester to New York City and Long Island,” commented New York Governor Andrew M Cuomo.

“While filming across the state, Peter Parker and the Spider-Man team provided local businesses and communities with a big boost in revenue and hiring, and we look forward to the continued growth, successes and economic impact of the film and television industry here in New York.”

New York offers a generous 30% filming tax credit with an annual fund of USD420 million – more than four times the yearly total available in California. The state also specifically incentivises post-production work in upstate regions outside New York City.

This season, New York has also been the number one city in North America for TV pilot filming, having attracted 15 different shows, compared to just five in Los Angeles, figures from Deadline revealed.

Superheroes will remain in New York for the foreseeable future as the state recently made a rich production deal that will see Disney/Marvel and Netflix filming locally for five connected comic-book miniseries.
