Cannes 2014: Dubai Film and TV Commission launches production guide

Dubai Film and TV Commission has launched a production guide with information on how to shoot in the city. The Film Dubai Production Guide covers all facets of local shooting, including permitting and licence rules, as well as details about hiring local freelancers and technicians.

“DFTC (Dubai Film and TV Commission) is committed to simplifying the filming process in Dubai, while also providing as much exposure for local, regional and international filmmakers,” commented DFTC Chairman Jamal Al Sharif.

“By providing a one-stop resource of information about where, how and who to film with in Dubai, the guide will help filmmakers to connect easily with fellow professionals and assemble a world-class team for pre- and post-production requirements.”

Dubai’s film commission was first set up in mid-2012. The city does not offer a formal filming incentive, but instead chooses to arrange custom incentive packages with international producers. A report for the commission published in December last year recommended a formal filming incentive and longer-term residency for production crew.

The city already offers state-of-the-art filming facilities at Dubai Studio City and in recent months has attracted high-profile productions like Shah Rukh Khan’s Happy New Year.

Nearby Abu Dhabi offers a 30% filming incentive, which has been more successful in attracting international Hollywood feature productions.

Legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer filmed scenes locally for his supernatural drama Beware the Night and more recently Fast & Furious 7 was a high-profile visitor. Disney/Lucasfilm is also reportedly filming in the city on a specially-built set for the new Star Wars movie.
