World War I miniseries Deadline Gallipoli starts filming in South Australia

World War I television miniseries Deadline Gallipoli has started filming on location in South Australia using Adelaide Studios as a base. Australia previously hosted American World War II drama miniseries The Pacific, which filmed largely in Queensland.

Deadline Gallipoli follows war correspondents covering the Allies’ ill-fated World War I campaign to take western Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. The four-hour miniseries will feature a host of high-profile actors including Sam Worthington, Rachel Griffiths, Charles Dance and Hugh Dancy. It will be broadcast in 2015 to mark Gallipoli’s centenary.

“We have such an extraordinary ensemble of international cast and crew for this landmark Australian mini-series,” said Brian Walsh Director of Television at cable channel Foxtel:

“Deadline Gallipoli will bring to life the history-making events that took place a hundred years ago with a story that’s never been told. With its unique perspective and fresh approach to this legendary chapter in Australian history, Deadline Gallipoli will be a completely compelling television event for our Foxtel subscribers in 2015.”

Added Worthington: “This is a fresh take on the Gallipoli story, with these four journalists fighting the upper echelons of the military to get the truth out and stop the carnage. I'm honoured to bring such an important story to audiences, in Australia and around the world.”

Adelaide Studios offers two sound stages and is designed for smaller-scale productions with budgets up to around AUD30 million.

The Gallipoli campaign is also the focus of Russell Crowe’s upcoming feature directorial debut The Water Diviner, which filmed partly on location in South Australia and in Sydney.
