Eddie Murphy to film Beverly Hills Cop sequel on location in Detroit
A sequel to the Beverly Hills Cop franchise that made Eddie Murphy a star in the 80s will film in Detroit, 20 years after the last entry hit cinemas. The original films followed Murphy’s Detroit cop on assignment in Hollywood, but the new movie will take some of the action back east to Foley’s home city.
Michigan has awarded the production a filming incentive payment of USD13.5 million based on projected in-state spending of nearly USD60 million. Around 350 local crew are expected to be hired during the shoot.
“We are excited to welcome Axel Foley and the Beverly Hills Cop franchise back to Michigan,” said Margaret O’Riley, director of the Michigan Film Office: “This project will highlight locations throughout metro Detroit that speak to the city’s heritage while making significant investments in the community by hiring Michigan workers and local businesses.”
Michigan offers a generous filming incentive programme with grants of up to 32%. The annual film fund fluctuates, but has been set at USD50 million for the next 12 months. There has been a recent call for the fund to be allocated on a longer-term basis to boost Hollywood’s faith in Michigan’s production industry and increase the state’s appeal for high-end TV shoot.
Despite the long-term uncertainties, the city is still attracting high-profile feature productions. Michael Bay built a replica set of Hong Kong in the city centre last year for Transformers: Age of Extinction and Zack Snyder’s new superhero movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is based at Michigan Motion Picture Studios.
