Tom Cruise films scenes for Mission Impossible 5 on location in Vienna
Tom Cruise has spent the past few days in the Austrian capital Vienna filming scenes for the new Mission: Impossible movie. The film is set to continue the action franchise’s impressive stunt work, which last included high-rise work on the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
Footage for the latest sequel has been shot on the roof of the Vienna State Opera. Cruise once again plays super-agent Ethan Hunt of the Impossible Mission Force.
The Mission: Impossible franchise has developed a reputation for exotic international filming locations since launching back in 1996 with a shoot that encompassed Prague and London. In the nearly two decades since, the sequels have been based in Australia, China, British Columbia and, indeed, the US.
Third sequel Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol re-energised the franchise by filming a major stunt set piece at the world’s tallest building the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, in the process becoming the biggest ever Hollywood movie to shoot in the United Arab Emirates. Dubai does not offer a formal filming incentive but the extensive support and discounts given by multiple agencies in the city amounted to the equivalent of a substantial rebate on local expenditure.
Filming for Mission: Impossible 5 will in fact be based at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden in north London. Cruise also shot his recent sci-fi time loop drama Edge of Tomorrow at the studio, where an expansive artificial beach was specially built for the movie’s alien battle scenes.
Like several of London’s main studio facilities, Leavesden is expanding. A large stage and an external water tank have already been opened in recent months and three new sound stages are scheduled to be built before the end of the year.
