David Fincher and Ben Affleck film Gone Girl on location in Missouri
Filmmaker David Fincher filmed his new domestic thriller Gone Girl partly on location in Cape Girardeau, south-eastern Missouri. The film stars Ben Affleck as a husband facing a growing media circus in a small Mid-West community following the disappearance of his wife.
About seven weeks of location filming took place in Cape Girardeau, with the production team spending several million dollars locally, reports the Southeast Missourian. The production also filmed stage work in Los Angeles.
“When we talk about a real, positive impact, it happened,” said Chuck Martin, Executive Director of the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, in comments reported by the outlet: “I think the reason Cape Girardeau got selected, ultimately, is that we have a wonderful mix of old and new. I think that truly it was exactly what David Fincher was looking for. I think it just really made it easy for the selection of our community.”
Missouri is not known as a location filming hub, but in recent years it has occasionally appeared in high-profile films. George Clooney’s bittersweet Up in the Air filmed scenes in St Louis and social drama Winter’s Bone also shot locally, introducing the film world to Jennifer Lawrence before she starred in The Hunger Games.
Given that Gone Girl is the highest-profile production to shoot Missouri for some time, local authorities are aiming to boost regional film tourism with a coach tour of the locations used for the movie.
The locations in Gone Girl may be purposefully low-key, but similar tours have been a great success in places like Albuquerque, which got a big profile boost hosting the TV crime drama Breaking Bad.
