Filming for Dracula Untold doubles Northern Ireland for Eastern Europe
New vampire origin story Dracula Untold filmed on location in Northern Ireland, doubling the region for Eastern Europe. Set in the mid-15th century, the movie follows Prince Vlad as he becomes the eponymous vampire in order to save his people from a marauding Turkish army.
Filming took place at Titanic Studios in Belfast and also in retrofitted facilities elsewhere in the city. The production also shot on location across the region, including the Giants Causeway, while the gardens of the 18th century neoclassical house Mount Stewart in County Down were used as the grounds of Dracula’s castle.
“Securing Dracula Untold was a real coup for Northern Ireland; aside from the direct economic benefit it is a wonderful showcase for the region’s locations and skills,” said Richard Williams, Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Screen.
“We are excited to see the end result when the film hits the big screen this weekend as I’m sure Universal has captured the extraordinary beauty and topography we have in Northern Ireland. Utilising popular tourist attractions such as the Giant’s Causeway, Mount Stewart, Roe Valley Country Park, Divis Mountain and Tollymore Forest Park can only have a positive impact for the tourist industry here too.”
The success of Game of Thrones has helped boost Northern Ireland’s production industry and at least one more series of the show is filming in the region, with another commissioned beyond that. Titanic Studios is set to build two new sound stages as part of the facility’s expansion plans and Northern Ireland Screen was recently given a 50% funding boost for the next four years.
