New TV drama version of Jekyll & Hyde to film in India and London
A new TV drama version of the classic Jekyll and Hyde story is set to film in India and London from early next year. The series is from UK network ITV, which recently commissioned The Chronicles of Frankenstein, featuring former Game of Thrones star Sean Bean.
Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the new drama will spend a few weeks filming on location in India for the opening episode. The shoot will then relocate to the UK for the main setting of 1930s London.
“It’s an exciting challenge to take Stevenson’s work and use it as the basis for a new Jekyll & Hyde,” said series writer Charlie Higson: “So many superheroes with secret dual personalities have been brought to life thanks to Jekyll & Hyde. He’s one of literatures most important and influential characters and it’s a privilege to be rediscovering him.”
Jekyll & Hyde is just the latest 19th century story to be brought to the screen, albeit to a 20th century setting. American network NBC recently tried to revitalise the Dracula story (above) for television, largely recreating Victorian London in Budapest. However, the show was cancelled after one season and the story has since found greater success on the big screen with Dracula Untold, shot in Northern Ireland.
Frankenstein is another classic story of the moment. Sean Bean's ITV drama is also set to film in Northern Ireland, while a separate US miniseries, updating the story to a modern-day setting, is in development. The much-maligned I, Frankenstein was released in cinemas earlier this year and Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy star in Victor Frankenstein in late 2015.
