Murder drama The Tunnel to return to Kent for second series filming
A second series of murder drama The Tunnel will return to film on location in Kent in southern England. The show is a remake of Scandinavian drama The Bridge and the first series charted a joint English-French investigation following a murder in the centre of the Channel Tunnel.
Shooting will begin in March in Dover, Sandwich and Folkestone, and could help raise the region’s profile, the Folkestone Herald reports.
“It’s really good,” a Kent Film Office spokesman told the outlet: “Although Kent is the location where it is based, they could have gone anywhere along the coast.
"It’s good for the economy because the crew and cast will be staying down here and the first series involved a lot of people and hard work.”
The first series of The Tunnel based itself at Discovery Park in Sandwich and filmed locally for nearly 120 days.
Kent is a popular filming location, partly because of its proximity to London. Television productions shot locally have included the ITV drama Mr Selfridge in Chatham. The recent Disney musical Into The Woods filmed partly at Dover Castle and Jude Law’s submarine drama Black Sea spent two weeks shooting in a soviet submarine in Rochester.
Original Scandinavian drama The Bridge focussed on the Oresund Bridge, which links Sweden and Denmark, and helped spotlight the region’s drama output in a similar way as Wallander and The Killing.
The Bridge has also been remade in the US, switching the setting to the Bridge of the Americas that links Texas with Ciudad Juarez in Mexico.
