National Trust launches map of BBC’s Wolf Hall filming locations

The National Trust has published a map of the UK filming locations used for the BBC’s historical drama Wolf Hall to help boost tourism. Some 40% of the series was filmed on National Trust properties and the organisation is expecting a 25% increase in visits.

Eighteen separate properties are showcased on the new map, which was put together in co-operation with the Historic Houses Association and Cadw, the Welsh government’s historic environment service.

“The close-ups and handheld camera work used by director Peter Kosminksy in Wolf Hall allows viewers to move through the world Cromwell inhabits,” said Harvey Edgington, Head of Filming and Locations at the National Trust: “This map will let fans step into this world and experience the places they’ve seen on screen.

“I think we can expect to see something in the region of a 25% increase in visitors, which is great news for these historic places as the additional revenue will help secure their future for generations to come.”

The UK’s TV tax credit made a UK shoot feasible for Wolf Hall. Production firm Company Pictures previously filmed epic historical drama The White Queen largely on location in Belgium, doubling the country for 15th century England. This was a more cost-effective option before the UK’s TV tax credit was launched in mid-2013.

Wolf Hall used The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol as a production base. Filming took place entirely on location across southern and western England, and in South Wales.

Filming location maps have also been used elsewhere in the UK to promote film tourism for specific TV dramas. Last summer VisitScotland launched an interactive map focussing on the locations used in the romantic drama Outlander and Game of Thrones is a major component of how Northern Ireland sells itself internationally.
