Korean Film Commissions & Industry Network sets new international team
The Korean Film Commissions & Industry Network has put in place a new international team to promote South Korea as a country, rather than by region. South Korea will get a profile boost in the coming months as a filming location for superhero sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Mark Siegmund has moved from the Seoul Film Commission to head the new team at the Korean Film Commissions & Industry Network.
The organisation will establish itself as the gateway into Korea for international producers, and as a way to connect with nearly a dozen separate regional film commissions.
South Korea has a staggered filming incentive, with a rebate of up to 30% available for shoots that spend over USD 2 million in the country and shoot for more than ten days.
Marvel shot key scenes for The Avengers: Age of Ultron (above) on location in Seoul last year. The film is likely to be the biggest of the year and will deliver a major profile boost for the city. New sci-fi Netflix series Sense8, created by the Wachowski siblings, also filmed in Seoul as part of a global shoot.
“South Korea is the perfect location for a movie of this magnitude because it features cutting-edge technology, beautiful landscapes and spectacular architecture,” said Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios and producer of The Avengers, when the decision was first announced.
“We would especially like to thank the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) for making it possible for The Avengers: Age of Ultron to come to Korea.”
Over the past six months, South Korea has signed co-production agreements with Hong Kong and mainland China, and also with Australia.
