Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 starts filming on location in Buffalo

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 has started filming in Buffalo in upstate New York. The first in the rebooted franchise was a surprise hit last year and the sequel will also shoot in New York City. Performance capture technology is being used to render the turtles themselves.

Production spending in Buffalo will come to around USD 7 million over the course of a two-week shoot, with the state-wide spend estimated to be around ten times that figure.

New York’s generous filming tax credit programme has made the state one of the top production hubs in the US, with location filming specifically incentivised to shoot in upstate areas like Buffalo.

“Thanks to the 10% expansion of the tax credit program for upstate productions, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 will be eligible for USD 5 million for qualified labour expenses, enabling the production to boost Buffalo's economy and promote regional tourism while bringing this next chapter in the Turtle's story to life,” said Howard Zemsky, President, CEO and Commissioner of Empire State Development, in comments to Niagara Frontier Publications.

Added Lee Rosenthal, president of physical production at Paramount Pictures: “Shooting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 in upstate New York is proving to be a great experience and we are thankful to the city for its warm welcome.

“Buffalo has provided the perfect backdrop to shoot some exciting action scenes, and we are thrilled to be getting things underway.”

Earlier this year, authorities in Buffalo announced they were looking for consultancy help in raising the city’s national profile as a filming location.
