Remake of The Crow to film partly at historic Coal Exchange in Cardiff

Filming for the upcoming remake of cult 90s supernatural drama The Crow is set to happen partly on location at the Coal Exchange building in central Cardiff. The movie will be the largest production yet to be based at Pinewood Studio Cardiff.

The Coal Exchange was built in the 1880s and as the name suggests was originally used as a market centre for coal trading.

Exports came to an end in the mid-1960s and the building was actually used extensively as a filming location until being refurbished to become a live music venue in 2001. Structural concerns led to the building’s closure in 2013. The production team for The Crow will be filming around the main entrance.

“The Crow will be on site for around six weeks,” said Ian Hill, director of Save The Coal Exchange, in comments to the BBC: “When they leave, we hope to be able to keep the front door open, and give the public access to the foyer and main hall.”

Pinewood Studio Wales offers producers a pair of 20,000-sq-ft stages, plus additional office and warehouse space. The pilot for new TV production The Bastard Executioner – from the creator of the US drama Sons of Anarchy – was also recently based at the studio.

“Pinewood Studio Wales is off to an encouraging start, garnering considerable interest from tenants and productions in the UK film and television sector,” said Ivan Dunleavy, head of Pinewood Group, when The Crow was first announced for the studio.

“I’m delighted that our dedicated team in Wales have ensured the Studio is fully operational.”
