Historical TV drama The Bastard Executioner to film full series in Wales
A full series of new historical drama The Bastard Executioner will be filmed on location in Wales after a successful pilot shoot. Wales is already the long-term host of historical drama Da Vinci’s Demons, which doubles the country for Renaissance Italy.
The Bastard Executioner was created by Kurt Sutter, who was also responsible for the long-running California-set biker drama Sons of Anarchy. His new show follows a warrior knight at the time of King Edward I in England in the Middle Ages.
“I love history. I love theology. I love blood,” said Sutter: “It's been very satisfying weaving fact and fiction to create a new mythology that combines all these elements. And with this extraordinary cast – Stephen Moyer, Katey Sagal and newcomer, Lee Jones – this world explodes on screen.”
“Kurt Sutter and [fellow executive producer] Brian Grazer have been spectacular creative partners – and dear friends – to our studio for years, and their collaboration has resulted in a fantastic and epic new series,” added Fox Television Group Chairmen and CEOs Gary Newman and Dana Walden.
“The Bastard Executioner, written by Kurt and directed by the talented Paris Barclay, is dangerous, brilliant, emotional and undeniable.”
Da Vinci’s Demons has filmed three seasons on location in the Swansea region of South Wales, with an adapted production base at former factory Bay Studios in Neath Port Talbot.
Pinewood Studio Wales in Cardiff could help boost the country’s international production appeal and will soon host a remake of 90s cult classic The Crow. The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol also offers easy access to South Wales filming locations.
