New Civil War movie films Virginia

New movie Josephine, set during the American Civil War of the 1860s, has filmed on location in Virginia. The state is a hugely popular filming location for dramas set during one of the most turbulent periods of US history. Miniseries Mercy Street is currently shooting locally.

Josephine is inspired by real wartime correspondence and tells the story of a young woman who disguises herself as a man to join the Confederate Army and search for her husband.

“An important project like this not only showcases the natural beauty of Halifax County, but helps to build a new Virginia economy by creating jobs and revenue in the region,” said Terry McAuliffe, Governor of Virginia.

“I am proud to have had these talented filmmakers in Virginia, a location that offers an unrivaled historical and visual backdrop for this story of loyalty, dedication and sacrifice made by women during the Civil War.”

Virginia played a key role in the Civil War and Richmond was the Confederate capital throughout the conflict. Eligible productions looking for location authenticity in telling Civil War stories can access state filming incentives, which include a base 15% tax credit.

Mercy Street (above) is being made as a miniseries following two volunteer nurses on either side of the war. Virginia doubles for New York State in TURN: Washington’s Spies, an established TV drama set during the Revolutionary War of the mid-18th century.

Production spending in Virginia reached USD 382 million in 2013, according to figures released by the Governor’s Office towards the end of last year. At the time the Virginia Film Office reiterated its commitment to TV production, stressing the long-term economic benefits of television shoots.
