Filming for crime drama Marcella to bring Nordic noir to London

Television crime drama Marcella is set to film in London and will tell the story of a female Met detective working in the capital. Hans Rosenfeldt wrote Danish-Swedish co-production The Bridge and will bring a sense of “Scandinavian noir” to Marcella.

The eight-part series will follow Marcella as she returns to the job after a decade away to start a family. She is assigned to investigate murders possibly linked to a series of unsolved killings she worked on before leaving the job.

“Hans has created a compelling central character driven by rejection and intuition who is at crisis point in her personal life,” said Steve November, Director of Drama at ITV:

“The narrative is so unpredictable with suspicion falling on nearly all of the characters. We’re very much looking forward to the ITV audience’s reaction to Marcella.”

Rosenfeldt’s series The Bridge (above) told the story of a murder investigation focussing on a body found in the centre of the Oresund Bridge between Sweden and Denmark. The drama was a huge hit and produced English-language remakes in the UK and the US.

The so-called ‘Nordic Noir’ crime sub-genre has had huge international success in recent years with TV dramas such as The Killing and Wallander.

As part of its drama commissions this week, ITV also announced a prequel miniseries to its iconic crime drama Prime Suspect.

Helen Mirren played DCI Jane Tennison across seven seasons between 1991 and 2006. The prequel, Tennison, will follow the character as a 22-year-old starting her career in 1970s East London.
