Spider-Man: Homecoming starts filming in Atlanta

The next entry into the Marvel cinematic universe, Spider-Man: Homecoming has begun filming at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta. The start of production was announced via the Instagram account of Director James Gunn, whose own Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 just concluded its residency at the studio.

Starring Tom Holland as the titular web-slinger himself, Spider-Man: Homecoming marks the first in a new series of films as part of a collaboration between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios.

Sony bought the cinematic rights to Spider-Man back in 1999 and as such, all Spider-Man films to date have existed outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This was brought to an end however when Tom Holland’s interpretation of the character made his debut in Captain America: Civil War.

Over the last week, a number of the film’s main cast have been announced including Comedian Hannibal Buress and Actor/Musician Donald Glover.

Pinewood Studios Group has a strong affiliation with the Marvel brand after catering to almost all of their recent films at both their Atlanta and London studios.

Atlanta is one of the most popular filming destinations in the world thanks to Georgia’s appealing incentive programme. The state offers 20% in tax credits to projects that incur a minimum local spend of USD500,000. There is no limit on the amount that can be claimed per-production and an extra 10% uplift is available by listing Georgia as the filming location.

The production is expected to include on location shoots in New York City, given that Manhattan is iconic for being Spider-Man’s home turf.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released July 7th 2017 in North America.
