BBC’s The Replacement starts filming on location in Glasgow

Production began last Friday on the upcoming BBC psychological thriller The Replacement, shooting on location in Glasgow. The programme was commissioned by the BBC’s Polly Hill in December 2015 and will consist of three episodes of 60 minutes each. The Replacement is being directed by Joe Ahearne (Doctor Who) and produced by Left Bank Pictures (The Halcyon).

The show tells the story of Ellen, a successful architect who tries to find someone to cover her maternity leave after she becomes pregnant. Ellen believes she has found the right candidate in Paula but tensions soon flare as Paula’s true intentions begin to unravel.

Morven Christie (The A Word) and Vicky McClure (This is England) star alongside Richard Rankin, Dougray Scott, Neve McIntosh, Navin Chowdhry and Siobhan Redmond.

Christie explains: “Joe's scripts are full of tension and it's a genuine thrill to be given the opportunity not only to play this deliciously rich character, but to do so in my home-town, with this extraordinary cast. I feel so honoured to be part of this wonderful team, bringing these complex and compelling script to life.”

MClure adds: “Joe Ahearne has written an incredibly complex and thrilling script. I'm really excited to play a role that is miles apart from previous characters. [I’m] looking forward to working with Morven and spending time in Glasgow.”

Thanks to the UK High-end TV Tax relief, domestically filmed BBC productions enjoy a lucrative incentive deal from the British Government. The scheme provides a 25% tax rebate when a minimum spend of GBP1 million per episode is met.

Interest in Glasgow as a filming location has increased ever since the Scottish city was featured in the historical drama Outlander, with scenes shot at George Square.
