Hobbit films could still shoot outside New Zealand

The upcoming Hobbit films may still be shot outside New Zealand, with the UK being viewed as a serious contender. The actors’ unions’ boycotts that originally prompted the location uncertainty have now been lifted, but Warner Brothers has apparently not yet made a final decision.

The studio said: “The actions of these unions have caused us substantial damage and disruption and forced us to consider other filming locations for the first time.”

Martin Freeman has been confirmed for the role of Bilbo Baggins in the films. Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis are widely expected to return to the roles of Gandalf and Gollum.
